With heavy support from Vrooom, and this time at lovely Roodkapje Rot(t)terdam, Pantropical is proud to present the first ever concert of the magnificent Colombian trio Los Pirañas on Dutch soil, and a special live set of Dick El Demasiado with local musicians!

■ LOS PIRAÑAS (co)
This band is formed by the holy trinity of Colombian tropical music innovators. Its members are known for their highly creative output: guitarist Eblis Álvarez is the frontman of the inimitable MERIDIAN BROTHERS, bassist Mario Galeano did tireless crusader work in cumbia scenes spanning South America, and leads FRENTE CUMBIERO, and ONDATROPICA, and drummer Pedro Ojeda also has his own stellar band called ROMPERAYO. These guys have been exposed to Latin American tropical music culture for about two decades and fused their combined experience into Los Pirañas; an instrumental encounter between cumbia, champeta, african sounds (like Konono's distorted trance), surf, and rock. This is the Southamerican psychedelic sound of the XXI Century!

■ DICK EL DEMASIADO y su conjunto patatas (nl/ar)
El Demasiado is also known as Dick Verdult: independent filmmaker, visual artist, and radiomaker. At the turn of the millennium his focus started to shift towards music. He then branched out to the Southern Hemisphere and developed his experimental “cumbia lunática” in Argentina, became an underground pop Icon in South America, and now still makes culos quiver to his angular style. For this Pantropical edition, Dick will team up with Rotterdam locals to flesh out an as of yet unseen version of his live show. Percussionist Chris Bruining from Gallowstreet, and La Banda Fantástica is one of the musicians joining him.

■ DØG (br/nl)
Brazilian DØG divides his time in Holland between geeking out with A/V installations (as 'ehCaetano'), and über-dancable DJ sessions. He will serve up a high-octane mix of funk carioca, tecno brega, brazilian bass. Heavy beats from the south american suburbs of the planet.

■ CATHY HEYDEN & ROGIER SMAL DUO
Parisian Cathy Heyden is an autodidact sax improviser who keeps true to her own ideas, performing all over the world with musicians, dancers, comedians, poets: Faust, Ganguru, Geoff Leigh, etcetera. Originally a hardcore/punk drummer, Rogier Small's quest for liberty brought him to places far beyond. He has been fortunate to play with artists from an ever expanding musical spectrum; from Earth's Dylan Carlson to Sun Ra's Marshall Allen.

■ KOMOREBI (jp)
Komorebi is a duo consisting of Shizuku Aosaki and Morihide Sawada. They combine drums, harp and vocals in an unusual way, and with great attention to detail. Sawada started playing drums in various bands circa 1980 and collaborated with biggies such as Faust, Damo Suzuki, Chris Cutler, and Keiji Haino. Like the delicate celtic harp playing of his music partner Aosaki, Sawada's music is strongly influenced by traditional folk music and minimalism. Komorebi's music as a unit is never really unsettling or really calm, but rather somewhere inbetween.

■ ALAN GUNGA PURVES / MARK ALBAN LOTZ (de/uk/nl)
The pairing of flutes and drums might be one of the oldest musical combinations ever, tried and tested on many battlefields, now revived in a new and exciting form by this duo. Multi-flautist Mark and self-proclaimed “squeekologist” and percussionist Alan are true individualists on top of their game. Both expatriates (Germany and Scotland respectively) live and work in the Netherlands, refining their skills in the Amsterdam music scene, creating unique sound palettes of their own.
